Overview
A general power of attorney for finance and property allows you to authorize someone you know and trust to manage and deal with all your legal, financial and property affairs on your behalf. The person you appoint will act as your agent and will be have the same legal authority to deal with your affairs as you would. Your agent will continue to have this authority until you terminate his or her authorization.
While the concept of appointing an agent under a power of attorney may seem remote to you, there are in fact a number of very convincing reasons why you might want to appoint someone else to look after your affairs. For example, suppose that you are going to be out of the country for a lengthy period of time or that you are going to be recovering from an operation, injury or illness for a prolonged period. In each of these instances, you would not be in an ideal position to manage your affairs and your inability to manage your affairs could do more harm than good. Maybe you need someone to deal with repairs to a property you own, maybe you need to have someone run a business for you or maybe you simply need to have someone to deal with your bank accounts. In each case, you could appoint a close relative or friend – someone you trust – to deal with these matters on your bahalf.
