A living will allows you to instruct your healthcare providers and your family regarding the use or non-use of certain life-sustaining medical procedures in the event that you become terminally ill or permanently unconscious and unable to communicate your own healthcare wishes. If you subsequently end up in hospital, your doctors and medical personnel are generally obliged to follow these instructions in the administration of your medical treatment. The provisions in your living will only apply where you are unable to communicate your wishes AND after two doctors have personally examined you and agreed that medical procedures will only prolong your death. If both doctors agree that this is the case, then certain medical procedures may be withdrawn or withheld, depending on the contents of your living will.
